
I’ve always noticed the clunky eye sores (see left picture) used by contractors to prevent skateboarders from wrecking havoc on public sidewalks and benches. Although probably necessary, they aren’t really aesthetically appealing, unless you’re into that sort of thing. So imagine my excitement when I saw turtles and starfish take the place of hanging metal along a stretch of the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building (see right picture). It is an artistic twist on an old idea. Art can be functional!
