I was talking about Haiti with some of my students, and played the Help Haiti Now CD. Beyonce came on, singing a rendition of Halo. Keela, out of nowhere, says,
“My mom told me Beyonce and Jay-Z worship the devil so I can’t listen to their music. But I still really like how she dresses.”
And you just have to kind of stare for a second and, despite the strong inclination to intervene, you continue on with your day.

That’s one of those instances where all you can think is “Did that really just happen?”
Wow, I’d suggest she did a little research and see if that information is true and then present her findings to her mom-one way or another – or not.

I was teaching Mardi Gras French words. When we got to the word for “sequin,” and I asked which celebrities wear sequins, one of my students, when someone said Beyonce, piped up the same devil worship concept. Then she followed it with, “It’s because they are Masons.” Where about these caregivers coming up with this stuff? I didn’t even address her comments. Someone else said, “Michael Jackson!” We just moved on to the words for bead and float.
